The stories behind our most beloved MORICO patterns – Part 2: Dark Matter & Crystal Seeker

Crystal seeker pattern
For a while before Crystal Seeker pattern was born. MORICO’s designer Tytti had an idea of using mineral and rock photographs for a textile pattern. Her father was a geologist and there was this shelf at home full of beautiful rocks and gorgeous crystals collected from all over the world. She had an idea of using these rocks as the inspiration for the print. Later on, mineral microscopy slides revealed how amazing and colorful these rocks truly were from the inside, even when the surface looked rough and gray.
With the inspiration from these rocks and crystals, the Crystal Seeker pattern was born. The pattern is designed in collaboration with illustrator and graphic designer Eija Vehviläinen. Tytti collected her father’s old photographs from home and Eija started to design crystal shapes out of them and combine these with her own patterns.
The vibrant Crystal Seeker print with rocks and crystals
Eija describes the pattern as fresh and geometric in a rough way. “The old photographs and slides of stones and minerals were the main inspiration for the textures. The shapes have been sought from the nature, but the result is rather abstract.” Eija describes and continues: “As a designer, I’m interested in the unexpected and perhaps a little unusual colours and colour combinations. The Crystal Seeker is light, and bright in colour, but it is also ideal for combining darker and crumpled shades.”
The Crystal Seeker pattern was featured in one of our summer drops of Crystal Seeker Collection in different summer dresses and skirts.

Dark Matter pattern
Dark Matter pattern has been modified from our Crystal Seeker pattern. This pattern has also been designed in collaboration with Eija. As gorgeus as Crystal Seeker pattern was with the vibrant colours, we wanted to have a darker pattern that’s more suitable for fall and winter. There was an idea of modifying the Crystal Seeker pattern into something new. We decided to swich the backgound colour from yellow to a darker purple almost black colour and modified the rock and geometric shapes of the pattern. This is how the Dark Matter pattern was developed. In a way this also represents our love for recycling, making something new out of something old.
The Dark Matter pattern was first introduced in our hoodies and sweaters
The Dark Matter pattern is a favourite in many MORICO pieces. You can find the pattern in our swim & activewear that are now on sale and in our gorgeous Moon Dress and Luna Top.
